snapshots The Camas (Wash.) School District #117 transportation department recently entered the community's local parade for the first time. The theme for the parade was "Outta This World," so the transportation staff entered a propane-powered school bus decorated to mimic a space shuttle, complete with a solar system, wings, a fin and turbo. "Our entry was 'Camas School District — Transporting Students Into the Future,'" Transportation Director Laura Nowland says. "Our finishing touch as the bus was leaving for the parade was American flags." Pictured is a ceremonial signing of Arizona House Bill 2170, which Gov. Jan Brewer (seated) approved in April. The bill revises current law by including a measure aimed at protecting students when a school bus is driveway. The bill states that the driver must activate the bus' stop arm and flashing lights if passengers are boarding or disembarking while the bus is stopped on a roadway, or on a private road or driveway. Yvonne Hunter, an attorney with the law firm Fennemore Craig (at right, in the silver top), represented, pro bono, the family of Elizabeth Bates and assisted with the bill in the legislation process. Bates was killed exiting a school bus close to her house on a private road, in a rural part of Arizona where there is little distinction between public and private roads. Bates is in the framed photo on Brewer's desk. Also included in the picture are Bates' family; Rep. Karen Fann (in the red dress), who sponsored the bill; and student transportation administrators Antonio Mlynek (in the black sports coat) of Washington Elementary School District #6 and Dean Humphrey (to Mlynek's right) of Pendergast Elementary School District. Mlynek and Humphrey supported Brewer's passage of House Bill 2170. John Fahey, senior consultant at Tyler Technologies, submitted this photo, which he snapped during a visit to the School District of Philadelphia in 2007. "It was a retired district-owned route bus that they adapted to plow the yard," Fahey explains. "Pretty clever!" Share your photos — Have an interesting school bus-related photo or a set of photos? Entries must be high resolution (about 1200x900 pixels or bigger) to be considered for Snapshots. 152 S C H O O L B U S F L E E T Photo by Mark Butler stopped on a private road or
